NCPSO-VA is on the move in Virginia. Representing employees for the Department of Corrections and Juvenile Justice and we have made some significant gains. Even though other employee groups or associations attempt to take credit for our accomplishments, we were able to get some things done in previous legislative sessions that can only be attributed to the efforts of NCPSO and their efforts to represent the employees their members in these agencies. In previous sessions we have been able to obtain passage of budget amendments that pertained only to state correctional officers of these departments. NCPSO also lobbied hard to obtain raises for all employees of these departments and had a measure of success, but when these other associations try and steal our thunder, we can point our members to the measures passed for corrections and juvenile justice only. Another piece of legislation that was influenced by and passed the General Assembly and has been implemented in 2019 is the Correctional Officers Procedural Guarantee Act (COPGA). This bill now provides a new system of due process when these Offices are the subject of internal investigations that every other law enforcement group in Virginia had protections under except for Correctional Officers, now they have the protections of the COPGA. NCPSO will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on August 15, 2019 at the Hampton Inn in Emporia, Va located at 898 Wiggins Road 23847. The Town Hall will convene @ 6:00pm. We look for a number of State Senators and Delegates to be in attendance as we continue our march toward the 2020 General Assemble Session. An invitation has also been extended to the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security, the Honorable Brian J. Moran.
In Solidarity,
Don Baylor
NCPSO Director of Organizing
